The Middlethorpe Conservation Area covers about 15 hectares and was designated by City of York Council in 1975. Inside the boundary are 3 listed buildings (1 Grade II*, 2 Grade II). The most significant is Middlethorpe Hall, Grade II*. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
