The Bishopthorpe Conservation Area covers about 43 hectares and was designated by City of York Council in 1989. Inside the boundary are 20 listed buildings (1 Grade I, 2 Grade II*, 17 Grade II). The most significant is Bishopthorpe Palace and Chapel, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
