The Burgh by Sands Conservation Area covers about 27 hectares and was designated by Cumberland Council in 1978. Inside the boundary are 18 listed buildings (1 Grade I, 1 Grade II*, 16 Grade II). The most significant is Church of St Michael, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 2, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
