The Cockermouth Conservation Area covers about 139 hectares and was designated by Cumberland Council in 1975. Inside the boundary are 100 listed buildings (7 Grade I, 7 Grade II*, 86 Grade II). The most significant is Cockermouth Castle (residence of Lord Egremont), Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 2, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
