The Clare Conservation Area covers about 112 hectares and was designated by West Suffolk Council in 1974. Inside the boundary are 121 listed buildings (6 Grade I, 11 Grade II*, 104 Grade II). The most significant is Chapel to Clare Priory, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
