The West Dean Conservation Area covers about 24 hectares and was designated by South Downs National Park in 1974. Inside the boundary are 24 listed buildings (2 Grade II*, 22 Grade II). The most significant is The Parish Church of St Andrew, Grade II*. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
