The Bothal Conservation Area covers about 5.1 hectares and was designated by Northumberland County Council in 1986. Inside the boundary are 14 listed buildings (3 Grade I, 11 Grade II). The most significant is Bothal Castle Gatehouse and Adjacent Wing to West, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
