The Goathland Conservation Area covers about 37 hectares and was designated by North York Moors National Park in 1993. Inside the boundary are 18 listed buildings (2 Grade II*, 16 Grade II). The most significant is Brereton Cottage Brereton House, Grade II*. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
