The Bishop Auckland Conservation Area covers about 85 hectares and was designated by Durham County Council in 1969. Inside the boundary are 69 listed buildings (8 Grade I, 2 Grade II*, 59 Grade II). The most significant is Auckland Castle, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
