The City Centre Conservation Area covers about 16 hectares and was designated by Derby City Council in 1987. Inside the boundary are 83 listed buildings (3 Grade I, 4 Grade II*, 76 Grade II). The most significant is Bakewell's Gates at The Silk Mill Industrial Museum, Grade I.
