The Steeple Bumpstead Conservation Area covers about 15 hectares and was designated by Braintree District Council in 1969. Inside the boundary are 21 listed buildings (1 Grade I, 3 Grade II*, 17 Grade II). The most significant is Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Grade I. Part of the area lies in flood zone 3, so an extension may need a flood risk assessment.
